Rethinking Security: The Limits of Endpoint Controls in an AI Agent World

Endpoint controls like EDR and XDR remain critical to enterprise defense, but they weren’t built for AI Agents. As these systems operate beyond traditional endpoints, leaders need new approaches to gain visibility, reduce risk, and extend security with confidence.

The rise of AI Agents is reshaping enterprise security architecture. As these systems become more autonomous and embedded across tools and workflows, it’s becoming clear that traditional endpoint detection and response (EDR) and extended detection and response (XDR) solutions were not built to govern this kind of behaviour on their own.

This doesn’t make them obsolete. It simply means that securing AI Agents requires additional layers of context, oversight, and governance.

How AI Agents Differ from Traditional Software

Agents Act Autonomously and Adaptively

Traditional software is predictable. It follows defined rules, executes fixed code paths, and responds within scoped permissions. That predictability is what makes it governable through static policies and signature-based detection.

AI Agents, especially those powered by large language models or goal-oriented logic, don’t behave in the same way. They respond to unstructured inputs, carry out tasks based on evolving context, and may act across systems with varying levels of access. Their behavior is dynamic and sometimes unexpected. This makes it difficult to anticipate, model, or block their actions using traditional endpoint controls.

They Operate Beyond the Endpoint

EDR and XDR tools excel at monitoring local system activity: processes, network connections, file changes, registry edits, and other low-level indicators of compromise.

But AI agents rarely live on the endpoint alone. They are cloud-native, distributed, and API-driven. They act through SaaS tools, call APIs across vendor environments, and often use the same identity and access privileges as the humans they serve. Their footprint is diffuse, and they often operate beyond the direct reach of device-based controls.

They Introduce a New Layer of Risk

Modern agents are designed to help users get things done. That means connecting to tools, taking action on behalf of users, and even initiating workflows.

This new mode of operation introduces new forms of risk:

  • Prompt injection and data poisoning, which happen well above the OS or process layer.
  • Over-permissioned agents, where entitlements mirror those of human users without guardrails.
  • Impersonation risks, where agents operate with administrative privileges or move laterally in ways that look legitimate.
  • Shadow agents, which may be created outside central governance or appear in tools security teams don’t yet monitor.

While some endpoint platforms are evolving to detect behavioral anomalies, the distributed nature of agent operations creates persistent blind spots.

Why EDR and XDR Need Reinforcement, Not Replacement

Let’s be clear: EDR and XDR remain foundational to enterprise security. They are indispensable for identifying known threats, tracking system-level changes, and detecting endpoint compromise.

However, agents do not operate like traditional applications. Their interactions span identity systems, cloud APIs, third-party platforms, and custom business logic. This kind of activity lives outside the domain of system signatures or block lists.

Securing AI Agents requires additional capabilities:

  • Identity-focused monitoring that recognises non-human actors and adapts controls based on risk context.
  • Visibility into agent actions, including which tools they use, what data they access, and how decisions are made.
  • Transparent audit trails, so that compliance teams can reconstruct activity clearly and confidently.
  • Policy governance tailored for agent behavior, including prompt validation, context-aware access control, and escalation paths.

In this environment, endpoint tools are still vital, but they are not enough on their own. The security model must evolve to account for software that reasons, acts, and adapts in ways traditional applications never did.

Moving Forward: Building Trust Across Teams and Systems

The goal is not to displace endpoint security, but to augment it. Enterprises need layered defense strategies that match the evolving architecture of their software stack. AI Agents are introducing new interfaces, new behaviors, and new risks. Pretending they can be governed with yesterday’s tools only creates exposure.

We believe the path forward lies in collaboration. Future-ready security will be built on partnerships across endpoint providers, cloud platforms, identity systems, and AI governance tools. No single layer can carry the full weight of accountability. It must be shared, visible, and coordinated.
